Savannah Hardin |
Defense attorneys for an Etowah county woman accused of
making her granddaughter run until she died are
making a last-minute attempt to relocate the capital murder trial outside
of Etowah County.
Attorneys for Joyce Hardin Garrard asked a judge Thursday to
hold the trial outside of Etowah County, citing three years of news media
coverage.
The motion came a day before final jury selection.
Prosecutors and defense lawyers are due in court today to pick a jury, and
testimony is set to start next week.
The defense says only three of 125 potential jurors haven't
heard of the case. The state hasn't responded, but prosecutors previously
argued to keep the trial in Gadsden.
Prosecutors say Garrard made 12-year-old Savannah Hardin run
for hours as punishment for a lie in February 2012.
Garrard says she's innocent.
