After denying
defense motion Friday to move Joyce Garrards trial outside of Etowah
County. Judge William Ogletree impaneled
12 jurors and four alternates Friday afternoon as the capital murder trial of
Joyce Hardin Garrard is set to get underway today.

A jury of six women and 10 men will return to the courtroom
today at to hear opening arguments. Prosecutors say Garrard intentionally
caused the death of her 9-year-old granddaughter, Savannah Hardin.
The girl collapsed, prosecutors say, after she was forced to
run for hours carrying wood as punishment for lying about eating candy. She
died a couple of days later at Children’s Hospital.
Jurors in the case will be partially sequestered, Ogletree
told them after administering an oath. They will report to a specified location
for parking and then will be transported to the Judicial Building and back at
the end of the day. They will remain at the Judicial Building with lunch brought
in and snacks provided for breaks, until court is adjourned for the day.
The judge admonished the jury, as he did each panel of
prospective jurors since the start of the selection process, to avoid all news
coverage and social media, as well as an conversations about the case.
