City of Talladega approves moratorium on pawn and payday loan businesses

The Talladega City Council Monday approved an ordinance creating a 180 day moratorium on the licensing of title pawn and payday lending establishments in the city limits. City Manager Brian Muenger, told the council  there are currently eight such businesses within half a mile of each other on East Battle Street. The moratorium is designed to give the council time to “review this matter in detail, as it relates to the full review of the available data on the subject, as well as to explore the current zoning and land use code as it relates to the subject.”  The moratorium does not impact existing businesses, as long as they stay in the same location and under the same ownership.
