Jacksonville council to revamp public safety complex construction

The Jacksonville City Council continued discussions on the cities proposed nte public safety complex Tuesday, discussing the possibility of dropping plans to include a new city hall in the construction plans.  Following a Tuesday work session Council President Mark Jones said the council will vote on the matter during its Monday meeting. If approved, the plan could satisfy local business owners who worry that moving city offices away from the Public Square could hurt business.  The city is looking at a vacant building less than a mile  south of the current city hall on church street.  The vacant building, housed a former fitness club at the southeast corner of Pelham Road and Vann Street Southeast.   Jones said should the city acquire the property, it could be either demolish the current building or renovate it to accommodate new city offices. The City Council borrowed $14 million earlier this year to pay for the new public safety complex, which will be built south of town near Jacksonville High School.
