Odenville woman charged in animal abuse case



A 61 year old Odenville woman has been arrested by Odenville police charged with six felony counts of cruelty to animals.  St. Clair County Assistant District Attorney Gwendolyn Connelly said Betty Wallace Smith,  was arrested in connection with the seizure of more than 80 dogs and cats from property off Woody Acres in Odenville in mid July.  Police received a report Friday morning that there were more animals at the residence.  Odenville Police Chief Adam Pardue said officers found 13 dogs at the property.  Pardue said the dogs were surrendered to the Animal Shelter of Pell City Inc., which came out and took all 13 dogs into custody.  The six charges of “cruelty to a dog or cat in the first degree” are Class C felonies, and if convicted , Smith could face one year and one day to 10 years in prison. Authorities say Further charges may be pending.
