Appeals court upholds Sylacauga murder conviction

The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals has upheld the murder conviction of a Sylacauga man. 34 year old Corry R. Averett, of Sylacauga, was convicted in Talladega County Circuit Court in September of 2013 for the murder of Roscoe Desmond Anderson III.

A neighbor of Anderson testified that he was awakened by gunshots on the night of the incident. He went outside and discovered that Anderson was lying in the street, dead. An autopsy on Anderson indicated that he had been shot multiple times.

The Sylacauga Police Department investigation went on for nearly five years before Averett was charged with murder. He was indicted by a grand jury in August 2009 when Averett was in federal prison in Georgia for a weapons violation.
