Two arrested in Attalla stabbing

Lucas Charles Staples             Dayton Cole McCoy

Two men have been arrested by police in connection with a weekend stabbing at an Attalla motel..
Investigators said the victim of the stabbing, which happened in the early morning hours Saturday, was a black male, a guest at the motel on Cleveland Avenue.
In talking to witnesses and the victim, investigators found there apparently was a party going at the hotel, and the two alleged assailants, both white males, apparently were there visiting a woman.
Things got rowdy, leading to a heated exchange between the victim and the two men now charged with assault. The confrontation included some derogatory racial remarks.
As the confrontation continued, police said 21 year old  Lucas Charles Staples, allegedly hit the victim over the head with a beer bottle, opening a “pretty good gash” in the top of his head .
While they were in a struggle, Dayton Cole McCoy is accused of coming up behind the victim and stabbing him in the back.
Doctors initially feared the knife might have struck one of the man’s kidneys, but they determined it had not.  the victim was released after receiving treatment and stitches for the stab wound.

Warrants were obtained charging both men with second-degree assault. McCoy was arrested Tuesday, and Staples was taken into custody Wednesday. Both were jailed on $2,500 bond. McCoy was released Wednesday on bond.
