New Execution date sought for man convicted in Sylacauga murder

William Earnest Kuenzel

The state has requested a new execution date for a man convicted of a Talladega County murder but who still maintains his innocence in the case. Earlier this month, a new drug cocktail was approved for carrying out lethal injections in Alabama, and as a result, the state has requested new execution dates for nine longtime Death Row inmates including William Earnest Kuenzel, who was convicted of murder during a robbery in Talladega County in 1988. He has been on Death Row ever since.
Kuenzel was convicted of killing Sylacauga convenience store clerk Linda Jean Offord by shooting her in the chest with a shotgun during a robbery in November 1987.
