Woman sought in extortion scheme arrested

Mariam Shultz

Authorities have captured a woman wanted for attempting to extort $1.6 million from businesses in Oxford.  67 year-old Mariam Shultz was arrested in Scottsboro.
Shultz and her common law husband 72 year-old Everett Stout were accused of filing false liens against property. Investigators say the couple targeted 13 different banks.
Police refer to them as "paper terrorists" because they allegedly use false paperwork to extort money, as well as harass law enforcement and court officials.
The two faces a number of charges including theft of property and extortion.
