Garrard trial delayed

Joyce Garrard

A judge has delayed the trial of an Alabama woman charged in the running death of her 9-year-old granddaughter.
Joyce Garrard is now expected in court on September 22. Etowah County Circuit Judge William Ogletree made the change Friday to move to delay the trial initially set for June 23. The judge said he acted out of an abundance of caution to give the defense additional time. Judge Ogletree also rejected a request from the defense to dismiss the case over allegations that prosecutors failed to turn over information about possible expert witnesses.
Garrard faces a capital murder charge. She denies accusations that she killed Savannah Hardin making her run for three hours as punishment for lying.
The girl's stepmother, Jessica Mae Hardin, faces a murder charge. She has pleaded not guilty.
