Former Childersburg councilwoman begins prison sentence

A former Childersburg city councilwoman began serving a federal prison sentence this week for her guilty plea to bank fraud and money laundering charges related to the embezzlement of nearly $1 million from the bank where she once worked.  61 year old Bonny Jean Carter,  voluntarily surrendered to the Federal Correction Institution in Aliceville accompanied by her attorney at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning.  Carter was sentenced in March to 33 months for her guilty plea to the bank fraud and money laundering charges. The prison in Pickens County is the newest federal prison for women. Carter is to be released on Oct. 5, 2016.
