A 24 year old oxford
man was in the Calhoun County Jail accused of hitting a man with his car Monday
morning. Jonathan Ryan Hughes, was
charged with a felony charge leaving the scene of an accident. Oxford police received a call just after
midnight Monday about an accident involving a pedestrian and a vehicle on
Burtram Drive. Police found the 32-year-old victim lying in the grass on the
side of the road. The man suffered from
several broken bones and internal injuries and was taken to Regional Medical
Center for treatment. Hughes and the victim had been involved in an altercation
earlier that night at a house on U.S. 78. When Hughes left the home, the victim
and another man followed in a car. Hughes turned down Burtram Drive, saw it was
a dead-end, and turned around. While
Hughes was driving back up the street, his vehicle struck the victim. some
witnesses reported the victim jumped out of the vehicle he was in and in front
of Hughes’ car. Others said they saw Hughes swerve to purposely hit the man.
