Woman sought in Etowah credit card thefts apprehended



A woman sought by authorities in Etowah county for stealing credit cards from local stores has been apprehended in Trussville and faces charges from throughout Northeast and Central Alabama. 51 year old Deborah Smith, of Birmingham, was arrested June 7 during a traffic stop. She is charged with obstruction of justice, identity theft, trafficking in stolen identities and three counts of illegal possession of a credit card.  Trussville police say that Smith tried to give police officers a false name when they pulled her over. After she was arrested, police found stolen credit cards, two laptops that had been purchased from Staples in Trussville with a stolen credit card and multiple wigs she allegedly used while stealing the cards from employees of stores in Gadsden area. Police say the suspect that Smith has done it at least 20 times.  Gadsden police plan to charge her with six counts of second-degree theft and four counts of third-degree theft, and Attalla police plan to charge her with illegal use of a credit card as soon as they can.
