Calhoun County Republicans learned Tuesday night that local
party chairman Gene Howard resigned over the weekend. Tony Moreland, the co-chairman of the county
party, announced Howard’s resignation at a meeting Tuesday night; Howard
officially resigned on Saturday. Moreland will serve as acting chairman until
the party appoints a permanent replacement.
Howard said he left his position for personal reasons, and deferred
further questions to party officials.
Moreland declined to elaborate on the reasons for Howard’s resignation,
but said the party was disappointed to see him leave. The announcement was made during a called meeting to present candidates
who had qualified for the upcoming 2014 elections.
