Several area football players are set to sign with college
football programs today which is the NCAA’s National Signing Day, .the first
day football players are able to sign a National Letter of Intent to their
future colleges. Oxford High running back Racean Thomas and Clay Central
defensive end DeAndre Wills are set to sign with major conference schools
today. Thomas is set to sign with Auburn, and Wills has announced he is going
with Nebraska. Jacksonville and Munford also will have football players sign
with college programs, including three sets of athletes who will be college
teammates. Jacksonville running back Dominique Thomas and Saks athlete Tre
Smith are signing with Central Arkansas. Oxford teammates Desmon Owens and
Kenyn Richey are headed to Tuskegee,. Chattanooga, is expected to land Oxford’s
Tae Davis and Munford defensive back Tavon Lawson, confirmed Tuesday evening he plans to sign
with the Mocs. Football isn’t the only
sport to have local signees today. Faith Christian goalkeeper Sydney Nordan
will sign with the UAB women’s soccer program, and Jacksonville outside hitter
Katie Neisler will sign with Samford’s volleyball team.
Gadsden City defensive lineman Chris McElderry is expected
to choose Tennessee Tech. Glencoe
offensive lineman Tyler Johnson also will sign a scholarship expecting to sign
with Jacksonville State. Ashville’s
E.J. Moss also is mulling several scholarship offers, including JSU. The
uncommitted prospect also is reported by Rivals.com to hold offers from
Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and UAB.
