Anniston Police say a woman who lied to officers when she
reported that her car had been stolen at gunpoint in the parking lot of a local
gas station Feb. 3 is facing charges of filing a false report. Investigators said, the 41-year-old Oak Lane
resident filed a false report after her 15-year-old son wrecked her car, valued
at $4,000, in Talladega County.
Investigators learned of the deception through a juvenile probation officer
who was informed of the incident from a member of the victim’s family. The woman originally told police that she and
her son had been waiting for a friend of her son’s in the parking lot of a gas
station on West 15th Street. As they were waiting, an armed man approached them
and told them to get out of the car. Police discovered the vehicle, wrecked
beyond repair, in Talladega County later that day. When investigators interviewed the woman
again, she stuck to the story that she and her son had been robbed. After
investigators told her about the witness, she confessed to filing a false
report.
Police said Tuesday that the woman will be charged with a
misdemeanor charge of false reporting to law enforcement.
