Faced with a capacity crowd Tuesday, the Anniston city council heard
public criticism on a council vote killing a proposal from councilman David
Reddick to set aside one fourth of the cities one cent sales tax increase
approved last year for public education.
The council had voted 4-1 vote to kill the proposal. Councilman Jay Jenkins said that the cities
public schools system spends more money per pupil than most districts, saying
that too much of that money goes to pay for administrators and building maintenance
in a system with too many schools. Over
a dozen residents spoke out against the councils decision Tuesday. In other action Tuesday, the council approved
a special events liquor permit for the Rumble on Noble also approving the
closure of a section of Noble street for the event. The council had previously delayed action on
the request after downtown businesses complained that the annual event was
hurting their business. The event is
scheduled for august 24th. In
approving the request, The council stipulated that planning for next year’s
Rumble on Noble should begin earlier, to include a meeting between organizers
and the council by Jan. 31.
