Gadsdens public libraries will soon begin removing banned books from the
shelves, and some of them may surprise you.
Books including The Hunger Games,” the Harry Potter series or The Lorax by Dr. Seuss are being
removed from the library shelves because they have been banned somewhere, either in the U.S. or
another country. Classics such as “To
Kill a Mockingbird,” “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” “The Color Purple”
and many other books that have been challenged through the years because of
content or language won't be on the libraries' shelves from Aug. 26 through
Sept. 23, the beginning of Banned Books Week.
The Gadsden Public Library staff in a news release said it will pull the
books from its shelves and keep them out of circulation. The Gadsden State
library won't be as extreme. The books still will be available for checkout,
but patrons will have to request them and will have to say why they want to
read them. Spotlighting banned books and
how the public reacts to the idea is part of this year's Gadsden Reads, which
features Ray Bradbury's “Fahrenheit 451.” That book, which tells of a society
where books are burned, also has made some banned lists.
