Calhoun deputy seriouisly injured at traffic accident



A Calhoun County Sheriff's  deputy is in a hospital today after being struck by a vehicle Monday morning while directing traffic at a wreck on Hwy 431 and Bynum-Leatherwood Road in Anniston. The Deputy was taken to UAB Hospital where he underwent surgery. Sheriff Larry Amerson declined to name the deputy, saying that the man’s family had asked that he not be publicly identified.
Sheriff Larry Amerson said the Deputy was struck by a citizen driving about 40 miles per hour and was thrown about 100 feet.
The sheriff's office said the deputy was seriously injured and has asked for prayers for him and his family.
Amerson said He has multiple fractures of his legs He has some bones broken around his lower spine. He has broken ribs.
Amerson said the deputy is an 11-year veteran with the office and a former Marine.
The deputy had extensive surgery Monday afternoon at UAB Hospital.
Sheriff Amerson says the female driver was on the way to work when the accident happened.
Amerson said state troopers are investigating the accident because the victim is a law enforcement officer. No charges have been filed.
