Smoking in bed blamed for Oxford fire

Fire investigators said it appears an Oxford mobile home fire Friday was the result of the homeowners smoking in bed.

The couple who lives at the home on My Drive in the Coldwater community are currently receiving treatment at the UAB hospital burn unit.  The woman suffered serious burns, and her husband suffered injuries from significant smoke inhalation.

Two first responders were also hurt during the rescue and went to Regional Medical Center in Anniston.  The fire captain had cuts on his arms from broken glass.  He and a paramedic also suffered smoke inhalation while rescueing the woman from inside the house, but their injuries were not severe and they returned to work Friday afternoon.
