Gadsden police investigating reported theft from incapacitated man

Gadsden police are investigating a report alleging a woman has used deception to steal from her incapacitated brother while acting as his caretaker.
According to the police report, the 58-year-old man became incapacitated in 1992 and was left under the guardianship first of his wife, then his mother in 1994. After his mother died in 2012, he relied on his sister to care for him.
The Department of Human Resources was contacted by a family member concerned that he was being physically abused and out of concern about the management of his finances. It was discovered that the man had taken out loans at the direction of his sister and she had been added to his checking account. The account has been overdrawn, and it is believed the sister has talked the victim into cashing in his life insurance policy.
According to the police report, the man allegedly has lost several thousand dollars to his sister through her deception.
