Etowah EMA to meet monday to discuss shelter placement

Etowah County Emergency management officials will meet with Etowah County officials and officials from various municipalities Monday to discuss where to put storm shelters in the county. The Gadsden/Etowah County Emergency Management Agency recently received a $617,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to build the shelters.  Emergency management  Director Mike Bryant and Operations Manager Michael Amberson said officials from throughout the county will meet at 10 a.m. Monday with the EMA Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee to prioritize where additional community shelters are needed.  The funding requires a 25 percent match, Amberson said, and letters of intent for the funding have to be submitted by Oct. 27.  FEMA-certified shelters are located in Gallant, Southside, Coates Bend and Northeast Etowah Community Center near Gaston School. A private shelter is at Doctor’s Care on Meighan Boulevard. The city of Glencoe has a storm shelter under construction.
