Schools in five east Alabama counties have been chosen as
part of 21 statewide to participate in a project to increase the number of
students taking college level math, science and English courses. The Advanced
Placement Initiative is a partnership of the Alabama Department of Education
and A+ College Ready, and will offer training and student support to increase
the number of students taking advanced placement and pre-AP courses. The area schools chosen are: Cherokee County
High School, West End and Glencoe High
in Etowah county, Brindlee Mountain High
in Marshall county. Ashville High,
Childersburg, Munford and Lincoln High.
This is the seventh expansion of the program, which means now about half
of the high schools statewide are taking part.
To participate, a school's AP teachers attend summer institutes and
receive professional development in the fall, as well as other training. They
are also compensated for extra time and work through stipends. Schools in the
program receive financial support for three years.
