Governor Robert Bentley visited Etowah County on Tuesday
afternoon to tour damage from the April 29 tornado that passed through Sardis
City. Bentley said the damage there seems more widespread than in many of the
other damaged areas. He said if there is a natural disaster governor of the
whole country, it is him, but that is not something that makes him proud.
Governor Bentley met with some of the people there who lost their homes,
chicken houses, and livestock. He said
the most important thing is that there were no deaths in the tornado. He also
praised the community effort over the past two weeks. Bentley said he is
pleased with the quick response of FEMA units to the area. There is a disaster recovery center (DRC) at
Sardis City Hall. More than 4,000 victims of the late April storms already
signed up for some form of public or individual assistance. Rosemary Raises is one of the FEMA workers at
the DRC in Etowah County And said there are more people out there who are
eligible but have not yet registered.
She encourages people to come in for a one-on-one discussion with a FEMA
employee as they can provide guidance that is not available when signing up
online or over the phone.
