Gadsden Bypass extension now inactive

Current I-759

The proposed extension of Interstate 759 to U.S. Highways 278 and 431 is now “inactive” after a no-build recommendation by the Alabama Department of Transportation was accepted by the Federal Highway Administration.  Four alternative routes were proposed in 2004 for the project, which was expected to cost as much as $100 million.  ALDOT officials said the no-build option was being considered because of environmental issues including the number of houses and businesses that would be affected. ALDOT officials in 2006 said an incomplete environmental impact study showed the project would affect 71 to 105 homes and three or four businesses, depending on the route chosen.  Since many of the homes are more than 50 years old, the area is considered a historic district. That meant to meet federal regulations, all possible planning was required to minimize harm to the area.
