Calhoun Commission announces decision not to seek re-election

Commissioner Rudy Abbott

Calhoun County Commissioner Rudy Abbott announced Thursday he  will not seek re-election, after serving three terms on the commission.
Abbotts district serves residents in Jacksonville, Piedmont, and parts of Pleasant Valley, Rabbittown and White Plains.  Abbott made the announcement during Thursdays county commission meeting which was also  Abbott’s last as chairman under the commission’s rotating schedule. Commissioner Tim Hodges will take his first term as chairman in February. Abbott said he wanted to spend more time with his 13-year-old grandson, whom he recently adopted. Abbott said he had been asked to run for re-election, and had also been approached to run for other positions, including for the state board of education, but said Thursday he’s done with politics.  Abbott was first elected to the commission in 2002, and re-elected in 2006 and 2010.
