Military vehicles used to transport stranded students

Two area law enforcement agencies were able to put vehicles obtained from the military to good use.  In Calhoun county, Sheriff Larry Amerson said they were able to use Humvees obtained thru a grant from the military to transport stranded students and motorists Tuesday.   Etowah county officials say About 14 West End High School students in Walnut Grove  were transported home from school Tuesday night in the Etowah County Drug Enforcement Unit’s armored vehicle. The armored vehicle, usually used on SWAT calls, was able to take a group of students home who had no other way home.  Students from West End Elementary had already come to the high school by bus Tuesday morning for early dismissal when the decision was made to hold the buses at the school.  Parents picked many of the children up, but there were 14 who had no other way home.  At least three school buses in Etowah County were stranded and students were held at school after the snow caught everybody off guard.
