An 11-year-old Chicago boy is recovering after being accidentally shot while
visiting Anniston. Police say that On July 9 the boy, visiting family in Golden
Springs for the summer, found a handgun that an older teen relative had hidden
in bushes at the home on Greenbrier Dear Road.
Police say that When the relative saw the victim with the firearm, he
attempted to snatch it away from the victim, causing the victim to pull it away
from the relative and the firearm to fire.
Police recovered a .25 caliber handgun at the scene. The bullet struck
the boy in the right side, exiting in the left lower chest. He was treated
locally before being flown to UAB Hospital for further treatment, he is
expected to make a full recovery.
Police said the gun recovered at the home has not been reported as stolen,
and no charges related to the shooting have been filed.
