A man who injured two young women with stray bullets outside
a Talladega Elks Lodge will serve 15 years in prison. 27 year old Jonathan
Darrell Moten, also known as "Peaches," pleaded guilty to four
charges in Talladega County Circuit Court.
Moten, was charged with
discharging a weapon into an occupied building, discharging a weapon into an
occupied vehicle, first-degree assault and second-degree assault. He was sentenced as a habitual offender, with
15-year sentence on each count to run concurrently. Prosecutors say that Moten was involved in an
altercation at the Elks Lodge that was broken up by club security. Moten
retrieved a pistol from his car and confronted the people he had been fighting
as they left the club. He fired his pistol at them several times in the parking
lot. Though Moten did not shoot his intended targets, stray bullets hit two
young women inside the club who were not involved in the original altercation.
Both women were treated for their injuries at UAB Hospital. Moten's intended
targets ran to their car and drove away as Moten fired several more shots into
their vehicle. Various people identified Moten as the shooter when the incident
was investigated.
