Man indicted in Cherokee Murder
A Cherokee County grand jury has returned an indictment against a man charged in the murder of a co-worker in November 2012.
38 year old Vennie Leroy Keaton, is charged with capital murder, first-degree theft and promoting prison contraband.
He was arrested in December 2012 in connection with the death of 32 year old Melissa Hudgins, and the theft of her car.
In November 2012, Keaton and Hudgins both worked as contract cleaning employees at Gadsden State Community College’s Cherokee County campus.
Hudgins was found dead in a mechanical room under the bleachers at the campus in Centre on Nov. 28, 2012. Keaton was seen leaving campus the day before in Hudgins’ vehicle.
That vehicle was found abandoned in Tennessee. Keaton was arrested just days after the murder
in Cookville, Tenn.
