Riverside considering leash law

The parents of a small boy, killed a week ago Sunday, by a pit bull , say they want a leash law in their community so that another family does not have to deal with having a child possibly killed by a dog.  The talk of establishing a leash law comes after a pit bull attacked and killed five year old John Harvard at his home on Honeysuckle Way. During Tuesday's Riverside city council meeting, the floor was open to the public, allowing anyone to voice their concerns on the about the city's potential plans. Mayor Rusty Jessup says the city is looking at neighboring cities that have leash laws.  The mayor said they will design one that they think will fit right in Riverside. Then the council will bring it up before the public.  City leaders and the public even discussed about banning vicious dogs.  Mayor Jessup hopes to have a first reading of the ordinance and a vote by the first city council meeting in May. He says the law will include steep fines for anyone who breaks the law. There was no one at Tuesday's meeting who opposed any bans or leash laws. Still, the mayor wants to hear from people on both sides of the issue
