Candidates continue to line up for the
upcomming 2014 elections. Labor union representative Darrell Turner
of Heflin is the latest candidate to announce. The 62 year old
Turner annouced over the weekend in a meeting of local democrats that
he will seek the District 13 seat in the Alabama Senate.
Turner said he's running to steer the Legislature away from big business interests.
A native of Cleburne County, Turner is the business representative for the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters. He said he represents union members across the Southeast on behalf of Local 798, which is headquartered in Tulsa, Okla. He's also chairman of the Cleburne County Democratic Party. Turner is currently the sole Democrat in a three-person race in District 13, which includes parts of Cleburne, Clay, Chambers, Cherokee, Lee and Randolph counties.
The incumbent, 75-year-old Sen. Gerald Dial, R-Lineville, is the majority whip, author of the latest redistricting plan and one of the more powerful figures in the Senate. Dial faces a primary challenge from Cleburne County Republican Party chairman 47 year old Tim Sprayberry.
