A
90-year-old Talladega woman and her 67-year-old daughter have been
arrested in Panama City Beach, Fla., after police found them staying
in an apartment without the owners' permission. Ruth Gambrell Luker
and her daughter Pamela Luker Mitchell are charged with burglary of
an unoccupied dwelling. The two women were discovered at the Aqua
Vista Condominiums when a team of carpet cleaners arrived to clean
the unit. The apartment owners called police, saying they wanted the
women charged if they didn't pay nearly $1,000 for renting the unit
and cleaning services. When Panama City police arrived, Luker and
Mitchell refused to leave and began yelling at the officers. After
saying her uncle owned the building, Mitchell claimed the United
States attorney general had authorized their stay, telling officers
that "President Obama would not be happy with police for
arresting her since she is employed by him directly. After giving
the women several opportunities to avoid criminal charges, officers
arrested the women, who continued to resist leaving. They also would
not identify themselves or allow police to contact their family. The
women had stayed in the unit in May and used a duplicate key to
return. They were arrested and taken to the Bay County Jail.
