A 27 year old Anniston man is in
custody today after holding police at bay Thursday afternoon in a
home on 15th street. Police had been searching for
Donrickus Stewart, on charges of failure to appear and driving with a
suspended license. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office had two
warrants for his arrest on charges of possessing or receiving a
controlled substance. Anniston patrol officers spotted Stewart
walking in the area Thursday afternoon, and he fled on foot running
into a house on 15th Street. Officers surrounded the home, and a
negotiator tried to convince Stewart to surrender. Several officers
entered the house, with their firearms drawn, and discovered a woman
sleeping inside. The woman was taken outside and an officer
discovered Stewart was hiding in the crawl space under the home.
Police were preparing to use tear gas in the home when Stewart
agreed to surrender. Stewart was taken to the Anniston City Jail,
where he now faces an additional charge of attempting to elude
police.
